Kingston's history risks being forgotten
Historic buildings, documents, photographs, and stories that define Kingston's character face deterioration, dispersal, and loss. Without active preservation and public access, the lived experiences and heritage of this community fade from collective memory.
Kingston's architectural landmarks, archival materials, and oral histories contain irreplaceable evidence of how this community was built, who shaped it, and what values sustained it. Each year of inaction increases the risk of permanent loss-structures decay, collections scatter, and knowledge held by longtime residents remains undocumented.
Many cultural institutions lack the resources to properly preserve and interpret local history for new generations. Schools need curriculum-connected learning experiences. Residents seek authentic connections to their town's past. And the stories themselves-the everyday details of Kingston life-deserve to be honored, studied, and shared rather than consigned to attic boxes or demolition sites.
Since our founding in 2015, Kingston Museum has worked to close that gap. The distance between what this community's history deserves and what it can currently access remains significant. Closing it is the work of our time.
